Grab your coffee, let’s chat for a minute. I need to be honest with you about something. For the longest time, I avoided writing this post.
Every “work-life balance tips” post I read online felt like it was written by someone who wakes up at 5am, journals for thirty minutes, does a full skincare routine, meal preps for the week, and still makes it to their desk by 7:45 looking like a Pinterest board. Or…it’s a post that reads ‘clock’ in at 9 and when you clock out at 5 you’re done for the day. For me, that doesn’t work. And I would read those posts and think- girl, if that’s balance, I don’t have it. I don’t think I even want it.
So here’s the version nobody’s giving you. This is my actual work-life balance routine- not the aspirational one, the real one. The normal corporate girl grinding and trying to live her best life. The one where some days I nail it and some days I’m eating cereal on the couch at 9pm because I ate lunch at 5 and didn’t meal prep for dinner. If you’re in a season where “balance” feels like a myth someone made up to sell you a planner, this one’s for you.
Why I Stopped Chasing “Balance” and Started Chasing Rhythm
Here’s the thing I wish someone had told me earlier in my career: balance isn’t a daily 50/50 split. It’s not scales tipping evenly every single day. Some weeks, work is going to take more of me- a big presentation, a launch, a deadline that won’t move, client events. Other weeks, life needs more of me- kids events, a family thing, a day where I just need to lie on the couch and not perform “productive corporate girly” for anyone.
What actually changed things for me wasn’t finding balance. It was finding rhythm- a set of non-negotiables that hold steady no matter which way the week is tipping. That’s what this post really is: not a perfect schedule, but the handful of things I protect no matter what.
My Honest Daily Rhythm
- I don’t wake up early- because I’m going to bed at midnight most nights. This is what works for me- you will have to find a sleep routine that works for you. I choose my ‘quiet’ time once I get to the office. That first 15 mins is devotion and sipping my coffee. Most days I’m up by 7:00 and I’m getting to the office by 9:00. Some days are more rushed than others. I wrote the more detailed routine out in my Realistic Morning Routine as a Corporate Girly post.
- I get dressed like in a way that makes me confident- even on the hard days.
This one sounds shallow until you try it. On the days I feel the least “together,” throwing on a blazer and something that actually fits my 5’2″ frame does something for my brain that no amount of positive self-talk does. I’m not saying fashion fixes burnout. I’m saying it’s how you feel mentally matter. My Petite Business Casual Outfits guide is where I’d point you if you want a whole system for this instead of scrambling every morning. Look good, feel good! - I have a uniform for days where I’m rushed, and I love it!
Decision fatigue is real, and by 10am I’ve already made forty small decisions before I even open my laptop. So I built myself outfit formulas I can grab without thinking- a great pair of work pants, a blazer, done. If you’re petite and tired of pants that need three inches hemmed off, my Best Petite Work Pants post has the ones that actually work off the rack. Some days you don’t need the fancy outfit, you need balance in your day! - I take my lunch break only when I have to.
I eat at my desk most days, because genuinely, I do get more accomplished this way. Some people will use their lunch break for the gym or just go sit in the car. That doesn’t work the best for me, because when I’m in my rhythm throughout the day, that’s where I like to stay. haha. You have to find the joys in what works best for you! - I have a hard stop, and I protect it like it’s a meeting. You can always be working if you want. It never stops, you never finish your to-do list.
My calendar gets a real, visible block at the end of the day, and I treat it the way I’d treat any other commitment I wouldn’t just casually blow off. This is important to me. Also again, some days this isn’t the case. I may be at work until 7 or sometimes even 10 pm. It’s about balance! - I let confidence be a practice, not a feeling I wait around for.
Some mornings I do not feel confident. I feel behind, tired, stretched thin, barely making it. But I’ve learned confidence is something you build through small repeated actions, not something you wait to magically show up. If you’re in that season, I wrote a whole post on this exact thing- go read How to Look Confident at Work (Even When You Don’t Feel It). It’s one of the most honest things I’ve published.
What I Don’t Do (And Stopped Feeling Guilty About)
I don’t answer emails after my hard stop unless something is genuinely on fire. This can wait until tomorrow. I don’t meal prep every single week- some weeks it’s takeout and that’s fine. I don’t have a perfectly clean inbox. I don’t wake up at 5am unless my body just does it on its own. And I stopped comparing my Tuesday to someone else’s highlight reel Tuesday, because that comparison game is where “balance” goes to die.

FAQ:
What does work-life balance actually mean?
Honestly? It depends who you ask. For me, it’s not a daily even split- it’s a rhythm of non-negotiables I protect even when the week gets chaotic, rather than a perfect 50/50 every single day.
How do I set boundaries at work without feeling guilty?
Start small, pick one boundary (a hard stop time, a protected lunch) and hold it consistently before adding more. Guilt fades faster than people expect once the boundary becomes routine instead of a fight.
Is work-life balance realistic for corporate jobs?
It’s realistic if you redefine what you’re aiming for. A rigid 50/50 split most days isn’t sustainable in most corporate roles, but consistent non-negotiables and a supportive routine absolutely are.
What’s one small change that helps with work-life balance?
Protecting your lunch break, even for 20 minutes away from your desk, is one of the lowest-effort, highest-impact changes I’ve made.
