New York City is an incredible place, and visiting for the first time is such a special experience. It’s gorgeous, it’s beautiful and it CAN feel a little overwhelming – in the best way! I’m here to help you navigate this city, ensuring your first trip is both exciting and surprisingly smooth.
I truly think best and only big TIP I have is do your best to not pack your days so tight and don’t try to ‘see it all’ your first time. Set your itinerary to only a couple of things per day. There’s always a chance to go back and I PROMISE this tip will make you feel less chaotic and stressed. It’s TOUGH to navigate NYC as a first timer- you will feel much better taking your time around the city and taking one day at a time in a relaxed manner! Hope you enjoy!
This post is all about your Guide to New York City!

Practical Tips for Navigating NYC
Before we dive into all the things to do in New York City, let’s cover some essential logistics! Knowing these little New York trip tips will help you save time and move through the city a little easier!

- Master the Subway: The subway is hands down your most efficient way to get around! It’s not unsafe during the day. Purchase a MetroCard at any station (you can load it with money as needed). Use Google Maps or City mapper for real-time navigation (let your BF do this :)) – they’re accurate and easy to use. It’s often faster and more cost-effective than taxis.
- Embrace Walking (Comfortable Shoes are Key!): Listen to your girl here and get you some good walking shoes. Also…make sure they’re not new. New York is a city best explored on foot. You’ll cover more ground than you expect just by wandering a few blocks. My top packing tip (more on this later!): comfortable walking shoes are absolutely essential. Your feet will thank you! The picture above is me in heels- because I typically am working while I’m here haha.
- Taxis & Ride Shares: These are convenient for late nights, if you’re carrying a lot of shopping, or when the weather isn’t cooperating. During peak traffic hours, however, the subway is usually quicker. Ubers and Taxis are expensive just for a 3 min ride- be prepared for this! You will be looking at an $90 fair just from the airport to the hotel.
- Neighborhood Focus: NYC is made up of diverse neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character. Instead of trying to see everything in one go, consider focusing on one or two areas per day. This allows for deeper exploration and a less rushed experience. I’m not very familiar with all the neighborhoods. We stay in the financial district to work and take the subway to more popular areas.
- Best Time to Visit: Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) generally offer the most pleasant weather. The holiday season (November-December) is magical but very crowded. I’ve only been in the spring and summer! I’ve enjoyed both.

Where to Stay: The Financial District
Choosing which neighborhood you stay in impacts your trip! While Midtown is popular, consider the Financial District (FiDi) for a unique and appealing experience. We’re always coming for a little bit of work while in NYC so It’s the only place I’ve stayed and we’ve absolutely loved how beautiful and quaint it is!
- Waterfront Access: Steps away from the water with stunning views of the harbor, Statue of Liberty, and Governors Island. Perfect for a morning and evening coffee strolls. The nights are so beautiful and quiet for walks too!
- Soo Quiet: Despite its daytime bustle, FiDi quiets down in the evenings and on weekends. It’s a calmer retreat compared to areas like Times Square. I like to see Times Square but as a 32 year old, I want my quiet time haha.
- Historic Charm: Beyond the skyscrapers, FiDi is super charming with narrow cobblestone streets (like Stone Street!) and historic buildings. It offers a quaint, almost European feel, with cozy pubs and cafes.
Staying in FiDi also means close proximity to the 9/11 Memorial, One World Observatory, and ferry access to the Statue of Liberty!

What to Do: Top 10 Things to do In New York!

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum
Located at the site of the former World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a deeply impactful and respectful tribute to remembrance. The outdoor memorial features two reflecting pools, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers, with waterfalls cascading into them. The names of those lost are inscribed around the edges, it’s unbelievable. If you’re staying in FIDI, this will be super easy for you to access! Just a quick walk from your hotel.
- The Experience: The outdoor memorial is free and open to the public. The museum (tickets required, booking online in advance is recommended) offers a look at the history, personal stories, and artifacts from that day. It’s an emotionally significant experience that can take several hours to fully absorb. Approach it with an open heart and a willingness to reflect.
Wall Street and Financial District
I work in the Finance industry and had the opportunity to tour the stock exchange! Such a neat experience! Even if you’re not touring the stock exchange, I would take some time to tour the area. There’s a ton of history here and it’s such an iconic neighborhood. Take a walk on the waterfront, grab some pizza from Joes, one world observatory etc.
A Yankees Game Experience
Even if you’re not a huge baseball fan, attending a New York Yankees game at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx is an all American experience and a memorable piece of NYC culture! The energy of the crowd, the ballpark food, and the rich history of the team create an amazing atmosphere. I had the best time here!
- Getting There: The easiest way to reach Yankee Stadium is by taking the D or 4 subway train directly to the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium stop.
- The Experience: Grab a famous Nathan’s hot dog! It’s a fun and engaging atmosphere. Not at all what I expected. Also such a New York thing to do 🙂
Catch a Broadway Show!
No trip to NYC is complete without experiencing the magic of Broadway! The energy of a live theatre performance is unforgettable. It’s an iconic piece of New York’s cultural heart. If Times Square is on your list- this would be a great time to walk around! Night time is perfect for Times Square anyway. Get some cute photos being all dressed up for the show!
- Tips: Book tickets well in advance for popular shows. For same-day deals, check the concierge for tickets. Consider a matinee for a budget-friendly option!
- The Experience: Dress up a little if you like (it’s Broadway!) Also, allow some extra time to soak in the pre-show!
The Iconic Boardwalk: Coney Island
For a dose of the seaside, take a trip out to Coney Island in Brooklyn! This historic amusement district offers more than just thrilling rides – it’s a cultural landmark.
- What to Explore: Ride the famous Cyclone roller coaster or the historic Wonder Wheel at Luna Park. Okay- that wonder wheel is scary. If you’re afraid of heights. Walk the iconic boardwalk, enjoy your time, and of course, grab a hot dog from Nathan’s Famous! This makes for such a sweet escape from the city bustle! I loved it here.
- Getting There: The D, F, N, or Q subway trains all go directly to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue, which is just a short walk to the boardwalk.
Central Park
Okay, I’m a small town girl and love being outdoors so Central Park is right up my alley. It’s GORGEOUS just as they say. After the energy of the city, Central Park offers a sweet escape. This park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, a relaxing picnic, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. I did a horse carriage tour here that was perfect! Visit famous spots like Strawberry Fields, rent a rowboat on the lake, or just find a quiet bench to unwind.
History: Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
This is an essential experience for any first-time visitor! Taking the ferry to Liberty Island to see Lady Liberty up close, and then continuing to Ellis Island for a powerful journey through immigration history, is incredible. Book your ferry tickets well in advance, especially if you wish to go inside the pedestal or crown.
The Brooklyn Bridge
Okay-with all the things to do in New York City, we can’t leave out the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s iconic. You can also make it it’s own entire experience. Walk the bridge at sunset then stop at Cecconi’s (this isn’t overly influenced). Tts SOO good. Its an italian restaurant with the most incredible vibe and luxurious setting. I wore a little athletic dress with sneakers this day because we had been walking around- don’t feel like you have to dress up. However, if you want to make it a more formal date night, this is a great spot for it! You will have the best view of the Brooklyn bridge right on the water! If you love italian, this is a must!
Times Square
Of course Times Square is on the list! I’m in my thirties so I will say this isn’t on the TOP of my list- but I do think it’s worth seeing at least once. If I were you- I would hit this sight up at night, maybe even the night that you do a broadway show. You can stroll around after the show and see all the lights and take a few cute pictures.
Empire State Building
We did the empire state building sightseeing elevator to the top and I will say this experience was worth it! Once you get to the very top- take some time to really soak in New York. You can see EVERYTHING from here. Its absolutely breathtaking.

Guide to New York City: What to Bring to NYC (Your Essential Checklist!)
Let’s make sure you’re prepared for everything this amazing city throws your way. A smart packing list can truly enhance your trip!
- The MVP: Comfortable Walking Shoes! (Yes, I’m repeating it because it’s that important). Bring at least two comfortable, broken-in pairs you can rotate (stylish sneakers, supportive flats, comfortable ankle boots).
- Layers are Your Best Friend: NYC weather can change quickly, and air conditioning indoors can be strong. Pack light sweaters, cardigans, or a versatile jacket you can easily add or remove. Even in the summer, nights can get a little chilly. Especially on the waterfront.
- Portable Charger: Your phone will be working hard with maps, photos, and planning. A fully charged portable power bank is a lifesaver.
- Secure Bag: A small cross-body bag or a comfortable, compact backpack is ideal for keeping your essentials secure and your hands free for exploring. Also, don’t forget a clear bag for the yankees game!
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated on the go! Many places have water fountains or are happy to refill.
- Compact Umbrella: Sudden rain showers can happen. A small, sturdy umbrella is a wise addition. Or grab one from your hotel front desk for free! We were allowed to take this into the game!
- NYC-Specific Apps: Download the MTA app (for subway maps/schedules), Google Maps, and potentially a ride-share app like Uber or Lyft.
- Camera (or a great phone camera!): You’ll want to capture the magic of the city. 🙂 I’ve linked a good inexpensive digital camera below!
- A Versatile “Nice” Outfit: For that special dinner, a Broadway show, or a night out. Think pieces that can be dressed up or down. Paired with sneakers or a quick change of heels! Maybe a nice athletic dress! I’ve linked two of my favorite dresses below that can be dressed up and down!
